What are my TOP 5 outcomes by the time I graduate Fashion Marketing and Business at the Norwich University of the Arts

I have always wondered, would I ever work for someone else after decision of gradual change from my career in Accounts/ Finance. Due to being a mature 38 year old myself, I know certainly I won't settle, unless I have opened and run my own business. And it is not only about the matter of becoming an entrepreneur, it is something I deeply believe in, something I sense is the right thing for me and something I truly believe I need just as much as air. But until it comes to that day to execute the right idea for me, in the mean time, what could be the directions I consider I would aim for:

I have researched above positions and my finding of what it takes. Would one of those direction truly could be ME? I can say right away before going into the detail. The things in life in general are not straight forward or like black and white as the chess board, as life can take us on unpredictable paths, maybe even better ones we imagined, maybe more suitable for us.

However knowing ourselves, analysing what strengths, weaknesses, what skills we already have and which ones we are aiming to explore can tell ourselves a lot about the move we will accept once the opportunity is on the table.

I took the degree course not because I did not know what I want out of it. I truly know what it is - I want to run my own business. However I am open minded about exploring the opportunities may be available if, and there is a big chance, the business idea may not take off as easy as the plane and therefore is god to have options in the other hand to hold onto, something to fall in for the meantime. Therefore for my own good I am excited of this task of discovering the little dots on the table, and what would it take. Nothing is easy and nothing should be taken for granted.

I read some day back in autumn about this FASHION BUYER, who has explored this path. And I remember her and so as many others I have come across over the many blog posts and sites, it is not the field for the week, not the field for the ones to be stumped over. It is great and adventurous and challenging job which reflects every day differently. However I have discovered during my research back, when I started the course, that there are many down sides or CONS to this career path and rather long que, something the patience will win the job role.

Just the few PROS

  • INTERACTION WITH MULTIPLE STAKEHOLDERS

  • TRAVELLING

  • DECISSION MAKING

  • ATTENDING MANY FASHION RELATED EVENTS

  • FAST PASED DYNAMIC

  • SALARY BETWEEN UPPER £20k MARK TO JUST ABOVE £60K DEPENDING ON THE BRAND/ LOCATION/ RESPONSIBILITIES

  • DEALING WITH ACTUAL FASHION ITEMS - RECEIVING SAMPLES

OFCOURSE SOME DOWN SIDES

  • YOU MIGHT NEED TO TRAVEL ON TIMES IT DOES NOT ALIGN WITH YOUR PERSONAL NEEDS

  • YOU MIGHT NEED TO WORK EXTRA HOURS

  • STRESSFUL AND DEMANDING ROLE

  • HIGH RESPONSIBILITY OF DECISSIONS YOU MAKE

Overall, if one cannot accept those duties, shall not apply in the first place. I would not mind demanding job but probably few years down the line, once my two little ones are a bit grown. Otherwise I cannot see this role would beat my desire working for myself by opening my own company.

As appealing it looks to me to do the job by taking pictures in your own desired time, which involves travelling, it probably takes a lot of effort, talent to be able afford living with this sort of income. However there are many STREET STYLE PHOTOGRAPHERS but this job does not come as one of the demanded roles in the job sector. And it speaks for itself. Unless you choose to work on freelance basis and are very good at communicating with people and finding sources of sale and are good on the YouTube, I think it is still unreliable field as the imagery is so accessible and competition is not requiring to be paid at times. If I would do it then only on basis as parallel hobby and extra source of income. I have researched famous photographer - Bill Cunningham, covered in separate post. An amazing person, really inspiring, but me who is a little rational I would still be adamant to leave my career to begin on the street photographers pass.

I think it is important to mention, how one becomes famous in right timing with right tools and vision. So in the days, when there where no internet and the tools what are available today, was different game and different opportunities, which today may seem a little challenging to choose the same directions. Because we are different and in different timing.

But to mention this job most likely would be one of my favourite ones. it is a good way to explore and get inspiration for whatever we do in Fashion, to go and get some shots from the models of the streets.

The last four options (FASHION DESIGNER/ SUSTAINABILITY REPORTER/ CREATIVE DIRECTOR/ ENTREPRENOUR), I have discussed in separate blog post because those options for me personally seemed the ones with biggest potential. So dive in and see what I have discovered, who cached my eye the most in the research process and if I would be the good candidate and why you could be too.
