I enjoyed the first semester and looked forward to coming in observing within the sessions and getting to know everyone.
One of my weaknesses is to get things written down in time, in momentum. And in one place. I do write most things down in one way or another, but then I write them in multiple locations, which does not help if I do not manage to re-organize them once I am at home. This is not because I do not like it, but my mind works through the urgent priorities and as a mum of three and working, is not an easy task to prioritize important staff in the right order.
The one of things I am proud of is my ability to speak up, even in group work. My curiosity has always been the lead and gladly I do not feel anxiety so much anymore by talking, so for that I am genuinely proud. I am not intimidated either by the fact that my accent is so noticeable, or by the fact I am the eldest. I look at it as a benefit. It genuinely is.
I am good at committing and going to places. I can well use my analyzing skills, however, I lack to push myself to do the gritty bitty things on paper when the physical aspects of the task have been done, such as visits to exhibitions, or photo shoots.
I have all the evidence in photos but I struggle with the digital side of things as I prefer things to be organized and easily understandable. The physical world is different, it is more natural than in the digital world for some unknown reason.
I must develop work and understanding of Photoshop and InDesign as that held me back more than I expected as I had no alternative.
I have two main priorities: journal things down from exhibitions to research and practice Photoshop and InDesign and save finished work well before the deadlines.
I have learned to analyze the image and make decisions about what works better for a cover and what are the differences between cover to inside images. In my opinion, I feel I have a good sense of what fits and I am lucky to not run out of ideas. More effort should be put into picking one, experimenting, and executing the one that works the best.
I have observed exhibitions during the first few months, one in Latvia and one in Norwich, and also attended all Guest talks and one Vice Chancellor talk. Just one VC talk due to commitments to work and distance to travel.
I have learned the basics of InDesign and Photoshop. I like these programs, I just need to be patient and persistent and ask for practical sessions.
I will need to collaborate more often with other individuals or departments within the University to gain a better understanding of the tasks, tools, and relationships.
My Plan for the coming semesters is –
Journal in one place
Organise the structure of evidence
Reference it at the source
Build the conclusion
Practice programs
Explore other tools the University allows students to access
Practice writing
Create assets based on my interest
Keep building my mood boards
Reflect objectively on the work in progress
Good luck to me!
